Metal Militia South Africa

06-05-2009 - ROWACA (Rockers Opposing Women and Child Abuse) is a collective of musicians, music fans and agents founded in April 2009 by music promoter, Wicked Mike, who earned his nickname for “telling it as it is”.

Disturbed by South Africa’s alarming crime levels that are the highest for any country not at war, vanishing democracy and ever increasing apathy amongst South Africa’s youth, he formed the organization to strive for the following goals:

Raise funds to assist children and women who are the main victims of crime through supporting charities and choosing individuals in dire straits for immediate support.
Raise awareness of the problems blighting South Africa.
Promote truth.
Encourage activism.
Encourage protest.

Owing to their regular platforms and peer group, “cool” factor, musicians and bands are the perfect spokespeople to target youth and make a difference. Music events will draw attention to the incredible and important work that child charities are doing whilst also expressing the assistance the public can lend.

GOALS:
The short term goal is to set up music events in bars and clubs nationally, showing that in the spirit of ubuntu, artists and bands of different genres can make make a difference by improving lives.

The medium term seeks individuals whose commendable efforts will invite them onto a committee whose first agenda will be a Voluntary Association agreement, detailed constitution and consideration for registration as a non profit organization (NPO).

The long term goal is the erection of bigger, annual events whilst simultaneously gaining more productive associations with businesses and corporates.

R.O.W.A.C.A. is a transparent organiuzation. Accounting sheets will be made available every bi-annually to sponsors and members.

THE EMERGING SOUNDS CHALLENGE 2009
Now in its 13th year this event has over the years created a rich musical history.
It continues in 2009 as musicians also have the opportunity of attending a series of music workshops as well as getting feedback from their performances.
Bands, groups, soloists and duos entering early can attend all the workshops.
Monthly winners also get interviewed on the Squire’s Show on Radio Midrand 93.8FM (this show is aired Monday nights between 19:00 and 23:00 where SA music reigns supreme).
The Emerging Sounds Challenge this year has pop, rock, hip hop, metal, acoustic and kwaito all sharing the same stage which makes for an exciting and entertaining format for both musicians and fans alike.
Monsoon Lagoon, Emperors Palace is the place to be on Sunday afternoons from 15:00 when musicians from all musical spectrums singing in English or Afrikaans strut their musical talents.
Entrance into Monsoon Lagoon is free.

Thirteen years ago no one thought we would be launching the thirteenth annual RBF Challenge in 2009.
Over the past twelve years bands from around South Africa rose up to the challenge.
The rich musical history coming through this event includes Seether (Saron Gas), Freshly Ground, the Parlotones, 340ml, Pestroy, Prime Circle, One Soak Thief, Holly and the Woods, the Blk Jacks, and Plush to name a few.
The pre-launch of this years RBF Challenge takes place during the month of February at Monsoon Lagoon, Emperors Palace.

Apart from the Johannesburg leg, events will also be held in the Vaal and Pretoria, plus throughout the rest of the country.
Bands entering the Gauteng and Vaal legs will once again have the opportunity of attending monthly music workshops free of charge. Last year each monthly workshop was identical. This year there will be seven different monthly workshops. The first one takes place at the beginning of March with the last one being held in September.
The earlier the bands participate or enter the more workshops they can attend.
Bands entering during February will be able to attend all seven workshops.
Bands who book to participate in advance will also be able to attend the workshops. The sooner a band enters or books their date with destiny the more they will be able to benefit from the workshops.
These workshops over seven modules will cover all aspects of the South African music industry pertinent to bands serious about their craft.
The thirteenth RBF Challenge is open to all bands and groups irrespective of music genre or style or age. As per usual bands play themselves to some awesome prizes.

Finally Flamedrop Productions and ENT Entertainment are doing what many have been screaming for. The wait is over.

For years Afrikaans speaking musicians have been paving the way when it comes to Alternative and Extreme music in South Africa, and this 16-ton strong compilation brings together a wide range of bands and genres - from legends, pioneers and SAMA winners, to new blood, innovators and foreign additions, all expressing themselves in the universal language of Music (in general), and one of our 11 official languages, Afrikaans (in particular).

The exciting bands on KOPSKOOT! (translated: “Headshot!”) cover everything from Alternative, Hard Rock, Metal and Hardcore, to Industrial, Grindcore and a variety of Electronic adventures.

This historic CD is set for an early-February 2009 release (distributed by IRIS - catalog number: CDENT 011).
A press launch listening session is being planned, and the first launch show is set for Friday 13 March at The Eye Of Horus in Belville, Cape Town, with K.O.B.U.S., Van Coke Kartel and Terminatryx.
Gauteng launch shows are yet to be finalized.
All updates will appear on the official website and Facebook group.

A DVD companion piece will be released shortly after the CD and include most of the bands (not necessarily the same tracks), and many extras.

S.A. Metal Godfathers (formed in 1986) with the legendary first ever extreme Afrikaans song (written in 1993 & recorded in 1995). V.O.D will be doing a South African reunion tour (in late-February and throughout March) after a decade of silence.
